Facilitator guide — Change One Thing
About this resource
Can I use this?
Supporting source is available for exploration; its owning resource describes the current learning experience.
Is help wanted?
No specific development request is open.
Has it been reviewed with learners?
Learner review is not yet documented.
This Alpha package is ready for written review; learner-pilot evidence remains deferred under REN-535. No observed completion estimates are available.
Materials to have open
- Lab Activity
- Notebook Lab Notebook — optional notes and export
- Resource Gallery — prepared teaching examples
- Resource Model Cards — required rules and hand checks
Demonstrate one model
Choose a Gallery example and hide the result table while inviting predictions. Read the corresponding Model card, name the single parameter, and ask a live chatbot to inspect the rules or propose one check. Use its actual response. The constructed walkthrough supplies prepared calculations, not a transcript to stage.
Run the baseline aloud, show a hand check, reset, and run the changed value. Ask someone to identify what stayed fixed. Correct errors against the rule rather than asking AI to certify the table. If AI adds physics or changes an assumption, point to the conflict and reject the addition.
Quick check values
- Mountain,
r = 0: the reference line stays at 0; reported heights stay 10 for A and 8 for B at every turn. - Token store,
loss = 0: the store stays at 12 tokens at every turn.
The Resource Model Cards give the full rules and worked hand checks.
Move to learner practice
For Zoom, share the card and invite individual, pair, or group decisions through speech or chat. In person, use paper, counters, or a shared display. A partner or facilitator may operate the chatbot, but learners choose the request and inspect its response. No separate learner account, recording, saved Notebook, or public sharing is required.
After the demonstration, learners choose an unworked comparison or the other model, predict, participate in live AI use, and execute both runs themselves. They may use the card's unworked variations. Watching or copying the completed table does not meet completion criteria. For self-study, the same progression starts with inspecting one example and continues with an unworked variation.
Keep the boundary visible
The reference line changes a reported difference, not a physical mountain. Do not let the story imply that moving one shared reference reverses either ordering. Ice tokens have no measured connection to kilograms or elapsed hours. This lab cannot support food-safety, refrigeration, climate, or historical conclusions.
If arithmetic is a barrier, pair learners, use counters, or offer a calculator while retaining a spoken explanation of a transition. Check the zero-change or zero-loss case together. Notebook writing is optional; the learner's decision and explanation matter.
Debrief
Ask for the baseline and changed results, a correction to the prediction if needed, one fixed quantity, and one limit. Ask what the live AI contributed and what the learner checked. Accept stopping as a next choice. Real-world follow-up should use the opening Gallery research links and a source-checking process, not the toy model as evidence.
