Facilitator guide: Stay, Steer, or Start Over
About this resource
Can I use this?
Supporting source is available for exploration; its owning resource describes the current learning experience.
Is help wanted?
No specific development request is open.
Has it been reviewed with learners?
Learner review is not yet documented.
Suggested session: 8–12 minutes: 2-minute setup, 4-minute individual or paired practice, 3-minute decision capture, 3-minute debrief.
Preparation
Provide the Resource scenario cards and worksheet. Learners may use a live low-risk thread, a printed scenario, or observation of a facilitator demonstration. No public sharing, personal task, or live chatbot account is required.
Facilitation priorities
- Emphasize that the correct move depends on the state of the work; “continue” is not the default answer.
- Keep the correction focused. The activity is not a request for a perfect final result.
- Make the difference between a clarifying correction and a constructive challenge visible.
- Ask learners to explain why they chose their next move, not whether the chatbot sounded fluent.
- Treat a decision to stop or restart as potentially successful when the learner can explain it.
Common difficulties
- Learner starts over immediately: ask what useful context could be kept in a reviewed summary.
- Learner keeps polishing: return to the actual goal and ask whether another turn would resolve a blocker or merely change style.
- Learner shares more than necessary: switch to a scenario card and restate the privacy boundary.
- Learner treats the response as verified: ask what source, person, or evidence would still need to check it.
Debrief prompts
“What did the chatbot think the goal was?” “What changed after your correction?” “What did the challenge reveal?” “Why did your next move fit better than the alternatives?”
Offer a quiet written-only route, read scenario cards aloud on request, and do not require learners to disclose private context or perform their conversation publicly.
Provisional timing for facilitator planning
These inherited estimates are starting points for facilitation, not completion targets for learners. Refine them after observing setup, access needs, discussion, and actual participation.
- Lab: 8–12 minutes
- materials — worksheet: 8–12 minutes. Use a low-risk task and one initial chatbot response, or choose a scenario card. Do not include private or high-stakes information.
