AI Safety Minute · one minute

Reduce privacy exposure by limiting AI inputs to information the task requires.

Use only the data you need

Unnecessary data creates unnecessary exposure. More input is not automatically better input.

Try this

Remove identifiers and fields that are not necessary for the task.

Ask together

Could this task succeed with less data?

One-minute script

Adding more information can feel helpful, but unnecessary data creates unnecessary exposure. The safer question is not “Could the tool use this?” but “Does the task require it?”

Try this

Remove identifiers and fields that are not necessary for the task.

Ask together

Could this task succeed with less data?

Facilitator notes

Data minimization does not make an unapproved tool acceptable. Organizational rules and permissions still apply.

Source notes

NIST defines minimization as limiting personal-information processing and retention to what is relevant and necessary for an authorized purpose.
