Something worth counting
Could we invent a currency that helps us notice what digital things cost?
Human
Money makes some digital things look almost free. I want to try a different yardstick. Where could we start?
AI collaborator
An image gives us one file to follow. A short video makes viewing time visible. An individually generated answer raises questions about repeated computation. Each is manageable, but each leaves out part of the story. Which fits the question you care about?
Follow the decision
Human
None of those quite gets at it. Let’s follow a community learning guide: people can read it online, download it, print a copy when they need one, and improve it later. I care about what happens after someone makes the thing.
AI collaborator
Then we need a purpose as well as a file. Shall we make the guide and measure it, or use a declared scenario first?
Human
Start with a hypothetical guide, 100 reading sessions, and one year. Those are our assumptions. We haven’t made a guide or observed its readers, and a reading session won’t count as proof that someone learned.
Our object is a guide with a possible life beyond its first use.
Keep the purpose, audience, and time window beside every later estimate.
Look at the process
This is a prepared conversation. The guide, audience, and one-year window are scenario choices. There is no measured file size, reading session, or completed learner trial. The fictional resource-currency idea in Andy Weir’s Artemis is a starting spark, not a physical conversion rule for this proposal.

Ask the audience: What would your choice of object make easier to see—and easier to miss?
02 / 08
Where does its life begin and end?
Before collecting numbers, decide what would belong in the account.
AI collaborator
We could count creation only, extend that to delivery and reading, or attempt the whole lifecycle—including equipment and eventual disposal. The first is narrower; the last asks for many more measurements.
Human
If we stop at creation, we might make a reusable guide look worse just because it took care to make. But “whole lifecycle” sounds like a promise we may not be able to keep.
Follow the decision
Human
Let’s combine them: map the full lifecycle, then calculate only the operational electricity we can support. Keep everything else on the page, even if we can’t put it in the number.
AI collaborator
Four operational components: creation, distribution, storage, and reading/use. We should put each activity in one component only. Device manufacture, water, money, and human time will stay in a separate record.
Human
And keep backups and revisions in the questions. A copy disappearing from my screen doesn’t tell us what happened everywhere else.
A smaller calculation sits inside a larger lifecycle inquiry.
Mark exclusions and missing inputs; do not treat them as zero.
Look at the process
The operational boundary includes one year of intended retention. Local and remote creation, network delivery, replicas, and retirement work need evidence. Provider-specific backup, secure-erasure, embedding, and derived-dataset behavior is unknown here. No allocation method can count the same electricity twice.

What can these sources tell us?
Open a source and ask what measurement it can actually support.
AI collaborator
The IEA report gives a view of data-centre energy. The Carbon Trust study models video streaming. Apple publishes device environmental reports. We could take an aggregate average, borrow the streaming model, or start with a device condition we can identify.
Human
The streaming study sounds close because it follows digital content. Could its figure stand in for our guide?
AI collaborator
That would need justification: a video service and a text guide have different use patterns. The study is useful for inspecting a boundary, but it does not measure this guide.

Human
Keep it as a model to learn from, not a coefficient to copy. And don’t divide the IEA total by an invented number of prompts. Let’s inspect the device report first.
AI collaborator
Apple reports 3.62 W for a 13-inch M4 MacBook Air at 115 V in its display-on idle test. That is a particular test condition, not a reading measurement.
Human
We can try that as an explicit proxy and see what it lets us calculate. I want the mismatch next to the result. If we later measure reading, replace it.
A credible source may be useful without supplying an applicable coefficient.
Retain one benchmark proxy and reject two shortcuts.

What might one Slug mean?
Several definitions could be defensible for different purposes.
AI collaborator
One option is an electricity unit: consistent dimensions, but incomplete resource coverage. Another is a carbon unit: useful for climate questions, but it needs a location, time, and conversion method. A weighted index could include several resources, but someone must choose the weights.
Human
I like the simplicity of energy and the honesty of keeping a wider record. I don’t yet trust myself to decide how many minutes of someone’s attention equal a litre of water.
Follow the decision
Human
Use electricity for the first calculation, but keep the other costs beside it. Show totals and per-reading quantities separately. Let’s try one watt-hour per Slug; that’s our chosen scale, not something we discovered in the data.
AI collaborator
Then a hundred watt-hours would be a hundred Slugs under this convention. Changing the scale changes the number of Slugs, not the electricity. Would you call this a currency yet?
Human
A proposal for a unit of account. Calling it a working currency would require more: who accepts it, who checks a claim, and who can change the rules? Leave those questions open.
The unit reflects a purpose and a choice of scope.
Try 1 Slug = 1 Wh of operational electricity; retain the separate lifecycle record.

No prices, wallets, tokens, issuance, or redemption are supplied. Energy, emissions, money, and attention are not added together. The proposed unit does not establish a market or a universal lifecycle price.

Try the arithmetic
Make one calculation small enough to check by hand.
AI collaborator
We could publish a single estimate, use a range of assumptions, or stop at a supported-component subtotal. Creation, distribution, and storage still lack defensible inputs. For a benchmark scenario, we can apply the device proxy to an assumed 10–20 minutes per session.
Human
Why a range? Do we know how long people read?
AI collaborator
No. The 10–20 minutes are our scenario choices. They are not measured percentiles, and this range does not bound real device power or real reading time.
Follow the decision
Human
Then use the range, but call the result an incomplete subtotal. Show me the units before the output.
AI collaborator
Watts × (minutes ÷ 60) × sessions gives watt-hours. The source supplies a test-condition power value; we supply duration and session assumptions. The scenario cards below use those inputs without filling the missing components.
Human
I can check that: ten minutes is one-sixth of an hour, not a tenth. And we haven’t measured this guide. Keep “benchmark proxy” beside every calculation.
A checkable calculation can be useful while the total remains unknown.
Inspect the inputs and missing components before reading the subtotal.

Alongside the number
- Devices and materials
- Embodied impacts and expected device lifetime remain outside the operational subtotal. Decide how to allocate shared equipment before quantifying it.
- Paper, media and logistics
- No avoided-paper, printing, CD/DVD, packaging, or delivery credit is assumed. Compare alternatives serving the same people and purpose.
- Compute and network
- Sector and service studies help identify questions. Workload energy, equipment efficiency, network path and allocation need applicable evidence.
- Water and resource constraints
- Cooling water, mineral use and local scarcity need their own units, locations and evidence. No exchange weights are chosen.
- Attention, comprehension and access
- Reading time is an assumption; benefit is unmeasured. Ask about comprehension and access needs without converting them into Slugs.
- Reuse, transformation and preservation
- Useful reuse may justify making and retaining a guide. Obsolescence, revision effort and discovery matter; counts alone do not establish value.
- Deletion and derivatives
- Backups, replicas, secure erasure, embeddings and derived datasets remain gaps. Deletion does not refund past electricity.
Look at the process
The scenario cards apply one device benchmark at 115 V throughout, with an assumed 10–20 minutes per session and one-year retention. No grid emissions factor is used. Low/high outputs vary duration only, not a probability distribution. Actual reading power may lie outside the proxy. An all-unknown alternative demonstrates what happens when even that proxy is unavailable.

Does reuse change the story?
Compare a shared guide with repeated use and possible fresh generation.
AI collaborator
We can report the total, divide a shared creation cost across sessions, or compare fresh generation for each session. The last comparison needs generation evidence we do not have.
Human
Then reuse should make our guide cheaper overall as more people read it.
AI collaborator
A fixed creation cost per session would fall as C ÷ n. But additional reading can add electricity, and storage or revision may change too. A lower average does not establish a lower total. In our partial model, only reading has a number.
Follow the decision
Human
You’re right—I slid from “per reading” to “overall.” Keep both columns. And don’t call a thousand downloads a thousand useful readings.
AI collaborator
With the same proxy and duration assumptions, reading electricity scales with session count. The per-session estimate stays the same. We cannot yet rank the full shared-guide and fresh-generation workflows.
Human
Good. Reuse is still worth investigating, but the proposal shouldn’t reward an obsolete guide just for being opened a lot.
The human revises the claim; the model does not manufacture a winner.
Carry both quantities and the missing creation comparison into the proposal.
Look at the process
The lower- and higher-use scenario cards change only session count. Their unknown creation, distribution, and storage components can conceal different real costs. C ÷ n describes allocation of an assumed fixed creation cost, not an observed saving. Comprehension and accessibility need their own evidence.

Keep, transform, or delete?
A digital object can have several next lives.
AI collaborator
We could keep every version, delete after use, or maintain a source while retiring superseded copies. Keeping everything may preserve context; selective retention needs rules; deletion can remove something useful.
Human
I want people to improve this guide, but I don’t want outdated advice circulating without a warning. Neither “save everything” nor “delete everything” fits.
Follow the decision
Human
Keep a maintained source, its evidence, and a change history. Put a review date on it. Retire misleading copies, and allow a local or printed version where that helps someone use it.
AI collaborator
That combines preservation with selective retirement. What happens to provider backups, embeddings, or derived datasets is still unknown in this scenario.
Human
Then record those gaps. No automatic Slug refund when I press Delete, and no assumed paper-saving credit just because the guide is digital.
Retention is a purpose-led choice that needs operational evidence.
Preserve what supports future use; investigate deletion and replicas rather than guessing.
Look at the process
Follow Compute → Create → Use → Discover → Reuse → Transform → Preserve. Deletion can occur when appropriate, not only at a predetermined end. A proposal we can explain
Bring the choices and their limits into one provisional charter.
AI collaborator
We began with a lifecycle currency. We now have an operational electricity convention, one proxy-based component, and a wider record. We could abandon the Slug, publish it as a total price, or retain it with this scope.
Human
Publishing a total would say more than we know. Abandoning it would lose a useful way to compare our assumptions.

Human
I’ll keep it as a provisional unit of account, and attach the boundary and gaps wherever I use the number. This is my proposal for this purpose; someone asking a different question could choose differently.
AI collaborator
The charter below matches the scope we chose. Replacing the proxy or adding missing components may change the estimate. Changing what the unit represents would need a revised definition.
Human
My next step is to measure actual reading and investigate the creation workflow. I also want someone who needs a printed guide to challenge our assumptions about access.
The proposal preserves the decisions that produced it.

The human’s proposal
My provisional Slug charter
A prepared conversation. Both voices are written to show one possible investigation.
What I want this to do
I want to make resource questions visible when deciding how to create, use and retain a community guide. The Slug should help us examine a choice, not decide whether the guide is worth making.
My definition and boundary
For this investigation, I propose 1 Slug = 1 Wh of operational electricity. I will consider creation, distribution, storage and reading/use once each, across one year. The supported-component subtotal below is incomplete. It is not a universal lifecycle price.
What supports the number
I accept a device test condition as a labeled benchmark proxy, combined with assumed reading durations and session counts. I will replace the proxy when applicable measurements become available. Other components stay unknown, and a different device may leave no numerical estimate at all.
Choices I would defend
I chose a reusable guide instead of the objects first offered. I combined a single energy unit with a separate lifecycle record. I rejected a streaming coefficient and a sector-total-per-prompt shortcut. I also corrected my claim that more reuse must lower the overall cost.
What I keep alongside it
Device manufacture, water, paper alternatives, money, attention, comprehension and accessibility stay in their own terms. I will preserve the useful source and change history, review it after a year, and investigate retirement and backups. No automatic avoided-paper credit or deletion refund.
What would make me revise it
Actual reading measurements, creation and hosting evidence, a changed retention plan, or a different community need could change the proposal. Acceptance, auditing, issuance and rule changes are unresolved. This is a unit-of-account proposal; it is not a functioning payment currency.
