In plain language

Some work may stay human because of dignity, relationship, democratic legitimacy, moral responsibility, or a social choice about what people should continue to do. AI may assist within the boundary, but capability by itself does not earn the right to take over the reserved part.

Why it matters

Automation decisions shape more than efficiency. They distribute authority, livelihoods, skills, accountability, and human contact. Naming human-reserved work forces a group to discuss which values should survive even when automation becomes possible.

Example

A court allows AI to organize evidence and help jurors find cited material, but reserves deliberation and the verdict for people. The boundary protects human judgment and public accountability rather than claiming AI could never analyze the case.

Common misconception

Human-reserved work is not merely work AI cannot do yet, and it is not a universal fixed list. It is a deliberate, contestable boundary. A sound decision must name what is reserved, why, who has authority to decide, and what assistance remains acceptable.
