In plain language

A latent representation is an internal pattern of values a model uses to encode features or relationships that are not directly observed. People usually inspect it indirectly through outputs, probes, or visualizations.

Why it matters

Latent representations can organize useful structure, but their dimensions do not arrive with reliable human-readable labels. Interpreting them requires evidence rather than intuition.

Example

An image model maps photographs into vectors where pictures of similar objects tend to occupy nearby regions, even though no coordinate is simply labeled “object type.”

Common misconception

A latent representation is not a hidden database of complete facts or a transparent record of the model’s reasoning. It is a learned internal encoding.
