RS Glossary

Process Context

Process context is the surrounding information that gives a process description its meaning: what the process is for, where it starts and stops, what it produces, who receives that, and where it sits in the wider business. It is what turns a diagram of steps into something two different readers will interpret the same way.

In plain language

Process context is the information around a process that helps people understand what the process is for, where it begins and ends, what it produces, and what connects to it.

Why it matters

A map without context can become a box-and-arrow drawing with no clear meaning.

Process context helps learners understand what they are mapping and why.

Example

This intake process turns incoming customer requests into scheduled service appointments. It sits between customer communication and field technician dispatch.
