In plain language

Speech AI covers systems that work with spoken language, including speech recognition, speaker or language identification, speech translation, and speech synthesis.

Why it matters

Speech carries language through sound, so performance depends on accents, noise, microphones, timing, and social context. Transcription accuracy alone does not cover every speech use or harm.

Example

A call assistant transcribes a customer, identifies the spoken language, translates the request, and generates a spoken reply.

Common misconception

Speech AI is not the same as audio AI or natural-language processing. Speech is one kind of audio and connects acoustic processing with language tasks.
