Let the records challenge the story
Our question
What should we investigate before changing staffing?
Back at Harbor Coffee
Here are three observed orders from September 14. They are not Maria’s September 15 purchase. The two mixed orders took ten minutes each; the latte-only order took five. In both mixed orders, food became ready after the drink.
Sam says he was switching between payments and packing food. That account gives us something to investigate. Three orders do not establish a permanent bottleneck, and this sample does not tell us that a particular staffing change will solve the problem.
| Order | Contents | Accepted | Drink ready | Food ready | Handoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9818 | Latte and muffin | 08:01 | 08:05 | 08:10 | 08:11 |
| 9819 | Tea and bagel | 08:02 | 08:04 | 08:11 | 08:12 |
| 9820 | Latte only | 08:03 | 08:07 | Not applicable | 08:08 |

Read the worked explanation
Investigate why food was ready later and how often that occurs. The original drink-preparation explanation is challenged by this sample. Its source remains a scripted AI suggestion; only its validation changed.

Three observed orders
Supplied recordsupportedThe two mixed orders took ten minutes each. Food became ready after their drinks. The latte-only order took five minutes.
September 14, three orders only. Investigate food packing; this sample does not establish a permanent bottleneck.
Sam’s handoff
Participant accountuncheckedDuring those orders, I kept switching between taking payments and packing food.
Account of the observed period. Further observation can test the explanation.
A plausible AI suggestion
Scripted AI illustrationchallengedDrink preparation may be the bottleneck. Adding another barista might reduce the wait.
Scripted illustration of an inference. It is not an observation of this shop.
Name the concept
Bottleneck: A part of a process whose limited capacity constrains the flow of work. A delay or queue is a clue, not proof of which capacity constraint governs the process.
