Remember it this wayA decision point is where one path becomes two or more possible next steps.

In plain language

A decision point is where the workflow can branch. Someone or something evaluates what is known and determines which step comes next.

Why it matters

Decision points shape the workflow.

When criteria are unclear, decision points can create delays, inconsistent handling, rework, or hidden escalation paths.

Example

If the customer request is urgent, it goes to the dispatcher immediately. If not, it waits for next-day scheduling.

Common misconception

A decision point is not always a formal approval. A rule in software, a frontline judgment, or a check for missing information can also determine the next path.
