  • handoff

Remember it this wayA handoff moves the work and the context to the next owner.

In plain language

A handoff happens when one participant passes something to the next participant in the workflow. A useful handoff makes clear what is being transferred, who owns the next step, and what context needs to travel with it.

Why it matters

Handoffs are common friction points because context can be lost, delayed, duplicated, or misunderstood.

Clear handoffs make ownership and next steps easier to see.

Example

An office manager sends a service request to a dispatcher for scheduling.

Common misconception

A handoff is more than sending a message or moving a record. The receiving actor must have enough information, authority, and clarity to take the next step.
