In plain language

An input is what goes into a process. It could be a request, a form, a document, a signal, or the information someone needs before work can begin.

Why it matters

Understanding the input helps reveal whether friction starts before the process even begins.

Incomplete, unclear, late, duplicated, or unreliable inputs often create downstream rework.

Example

A customer service request form is an input. If the form does not ask for the customer's preferred appointment window, the team may need to call the customer later.
