Remember it this wayAn observation is what you directly noticed; an interpretation is what you think it means.

In plain language

An observation records what you directly noticed without adding an explanation for why it happened or what it means.

Why it matters

Observations should be separated from assumptions and hypotheses.

This keeps the assessment honest and prevents premature recommendations.

Example

Observation: The office manager copies customer information from email into the CRM and then into a spreadsheet.

Common misconception

An observation is not the same as an interpretation or conclusion. “The customer called three times” is an observation; “the customer is impatient” is an interpretation.
