Frontier Model

A frontier model is a model considered among the most capable available at a given time, often because its broad capabilities or scale create novel opportunities, uncertainties, or risk-management concerns.

Remember it this wayFrontier means leading edge under a stated definition and date.

In plain language

Frontier is a moving, context-dependent label. Technical, policy, and industry definitions may use different capability measures, compute thresholds, or risk criteria.

Why it matters

The label can trigger special governance attention, but teams must identify the actual definition and evidence rather than treating frontier as a stable brand category.

Example

A regulator and a company use different thresholds to decide whether a newly trained general-purpose model belongs in a frontier-risk evaluation program.

Common misconception

Frontier does not automatically mean best for every task, public, unsafe, or legally classified the same way everywhere.
