The Ledger of Remainders

Stage 04 · 40-minute guided world

The Afterlives

A byproduct can carry value and harm at the same time.

Follow repair, resale, refurbishment, parts harvesting, formal recovery, informal livelihoods, lost materials, hazards, and public costs without collapsing them into one recycling story.

A used phone branches by copper lines toward a resale box, repaired phone, parts tray, separated materials, contained battery, fiber, and bread end.
afterlives · observed object study

I · Immutable

Observed consequences

  • The same device can become another user's product, a repairer's parts stock, a recycler's material input, a hazardous residue, or an undocumented flow.
  • Recovery creates economic activity and material value while quality, safety, exposure, and working conditions vary.
  • Global totals conceal where devices move and who receives livelihoods, costs, hazards, and retained value.

II · Adjustable

Classification and accounting

  1. Is this afterlife reuse, repair, refurbishment, recovery, disposal, or an unresolved mixture?
  2. Which material fractions are actually recovered, at what quality, and under whose working conditions?
  3. Which benefits and costs appear in market value, public accounts, households, bodies, and ecosystems?

III · Explicit

Value judgment and response

What would a response protect when recovery itself sustains both livelihoods and exposure?
